Drake Wins Top Artist at 2017 Billboard Music Awards, Beats Adele’s Record
Drake can add another record-breaking win to his resume. The rapper earned the award for Top Artist at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards Sunday night (May 21), bringing his grand total to 13 awards. The feat means he has officially knocked Adele from her spot as the previous record holder for most BBMAs earned in a single night.
The More Life creator, who bests Adele, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, The Chainsmokers, Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, Rihanna, Twenty One Pilots and The Weeknd in the Top Artist category, brought his whole team onstage with him to accept the award—Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and his dad included.
As he started off his acceptance speech, Drake made sure to direct his words at Adele. “I wanna say hold tight, Adele, ’cause when a new ting drops yeah you’ll fall back to get the record back,” he stated.
Drizzy also shared some hilarious words of wisdom from a friend. “Someone wise once told me that, um, life is like toilet paper, you’re either on a roll or you’re taking shit from an asshole,” the Toronto native said, putting his BBMAs award in the air as a sign of triumph.
Before leaving the stage, Drake took a shot of what appeared to be his whisky brand Virginia Black and his team followed suit, holding their bottles up.
In addition to the MC’s Top Artist award, Drake also won Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Album, Top Rap Tour, Top R&B Song, Top R&B Collaboration, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Streaming Song (Audio), Top Song Sales Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, Top Male Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album.
