Freddie Gibbs Channels The Notorious B.I.G. in The Avalanches’ New Song ‘Bad Day’
The Avalanches link with Freddie Gibbs for “Bad Day,” a track featuring Gibbs’ signature rugged bars and samples from Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life” and Shuggie Otis’ “Strawberry Letter 23.” Listen to the song for yourself just above.
The Australian electronic group’s dreamy instrumental induces nostalgia, which makes it a unique audio-canvas for Gibbs’ hard bars. For his part, Gibbs interpolates a verse from “Juicy,” one of the Notorious B.I.G.’s biggest hits. In a verse that manages to be simultaneously grimy and aspirational, Gibbs raps, “Life without fear/Puttin’ five karats in my baby girl’s ear/Used to put the cars in my baby mama’s name/4 A.M. for breakfast we was cookin’ cocaine.” He then goes back to his Biggie flow, rapping, “Now it’s lunches Brunches, interview by the fuckin’ pool/No security, I’m solo with my fuckin’ tool/Niggas tweetin’ ’bout a murder, bust a fuckin’ move/If we comin’ through, we leave their bodies on the fuckin’ news.”
The song is a good way for Gibbs to end 2016, which has been a very tumultuous year for the Indiana rapper. Back in August, the Shadow of a Doubt artist was released from jail on bail after being formally charged with sexual assault. A little over a month later, he was acquitted on the charges.
“Bad Day” is just the second track Gibbs has released since his legal issues came to an end. The first was the Harry Fraud-produced “All Day,” which you can bump about here.
