Today, Dec. 29, is the 23rd birthday of Rae Sremmurd rapper Slim Jxmmi.

Aaquil “Slim Jxmmi” Brown was born in California but brought up in Tupelo, Miss. Jxmmi and his brother Khalif “Swae Lee” Brown first started making music under the stage name of Dem Outta St8 Boyz. The guys got some regional hype, but it wasn’t until Atlanta super producer Mike Will Made-It discovered and signed them to his label Ear Drummers Enteratinment in 2014 that their career really started to skyrocket.

Jxmmi and Swae changed their stage name to Rae Sremmurd in 2014 by spelling the name of the label Ear Drummers backwards. Their breakout hit was 2014’s “No Flex Zone,” which not only added another piece of slang to hip-hop’s crazy lexicon, but peaked at No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went platinum in single sales. In January 2015, the pair dropped their debut album SremmLife which claimed the No. 5 spot on the Billboard 200. Other party-starting cuts off the LP include “No Type,” “Throw Some Mo,” and “This Could Be Us.”

Determined to keep the turn-up going, the guys doubled down and dropped their sophomore album SremmLife 2 in August of 2016. SremmLife 2 spawned the biggest single of Rae Sremmurd’s career thus far, “Black Beatles.” Thanks to the viral sensation of the Mannequin Challenge this year, which used the song as the soundtrack to the funny challenge, “Black Beatles” soared to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in November of this year.

Aside from two chart-topping albums with his brother, Slim Jxmmi has done solo work, collabing with K Camp, RiFF RaFF, Rich The Kid and more.
