Here's How Colin Kaepernick Is Helping Somalia

Somalia is in dire need of international assistance amid a catastrophic drought that claimed over 100 lives in just two days. The calamity inspired Colin Kaepernick to help the East African nation.

Kaepernick joined the #TurkishAirlinesHelpSomalia effort on social media, encouraging the airline — which is touted as “connected Somalia to the rest of the world”— to provide food and water to the country.

Thanks to professional athlete, and other celebrities, plus the general power of social media, the airline offered a cargo plane with food and water.

“Amazing news, Turkish Airlines granted us an airplane to fly to Somalia, a 60-ton cargo plane so we can fly there with food, with water for these people,” the former 49ers player said in a Twitter video posted Friday (March 17). “Now we’ve started a GoFundMe page to allow anyone to help us donate food, donate water. We’ll make sure every cent goes to help these people.”

Keapernick also tweeted a link to a Go Fund Me account started by Chaka Bars, founder of bodyweight training group Spartanfam, along with Ben Stiller and others, launched the campaign which raised more than $1.2 million in one day.
