iLe Sings Theme Song For Upcoming ‘El Chapo’ Series

The biographical Univision-Netflix series about the notorious Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman will premiere Sunday April 23, and the eerie, yet alluring theme song has been released as a Billboard exclusive.

“Vienen a Verme” (above) is a beautiful ballad carried out by Ileana Cabra, better known by as iLe, who was a member of the Puerto Rican band Calle 13 for 10 years. iLe also joined Colombian composer Andres Botero in the writing process for the song.

“‘Vienen a Verme’ is a basically a song about a desperado,” Botero tells Billboard. “I tried to picture a Mexican cowboy, modern, but old school as well…I always asked myself what El Chapo’s heart would sound like. It had to be calm, but driven. So the beat comes from that interpretation of his pulse.”
