Lil Wayne Pays Tribute to Craig Sager

The basketball world was hit hard yesterday (Dec. 15) when longtime Turner Sports broadcaster Craig Sager passed away at the age of 65. Lil Wayne, a diehard sports fan, was one of the many hip-hop artists to pay respect to Sager. Weezy added to his thoughts today (Dec. 16) with a heartfelt tribute.

“This is for Mr. Craig Sager. Sir, rest in peace,” Wayne said in above video. “You’ll be gone but never forgotten. You will be missed, enormously missed by a nation of people from afar, from those who didn’t get a chance to meet you, and number one by your family, who my prayers go to. I never go the chance to meet you, unfortunately. It’s something that I wish I was able to do. But again, from over here, from afar, you was always admired, you was always loved, and everything you ever worn was always number one in my book.”

Weezy touched on how hard Sager’s death hit him despite the fact they’ve never met. The comment revealed how a celebrity like Lil Wayne can still feel like a fan.

“Today I actually got a little choked up, and it was an emotion that I haven’t felt in a long time,” he said. “It showed me how strong respect can be for someone I’ve never met.”

Sager may have succumbed to his long battle with acute myeloid leukemia, but the sideline reporter got to go out in style this past summer. TNT and ESPN made an agreement that allowed Sager to work an NBA Finals game for the first time in his illustrious career.
