Malia Obama Joined The Standing Rock Protest

While we don’t usually see the Obama girls getting heavily involved in political movements, now that their dad is out of office anything is possible. Only one week after her family left the White House, Malia Obama was spotted at a Standing Rock rally at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah this weekend, Democracy Now! confirms.

The event, which is to voice continued opposition against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline on the sacred land, was hosted by actress and activist Shailene Woodley and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman, Dave Archambault II.

Woodley was the one who shared her reaction to Barack Obama’s eldest daughter being at the event. “It was amazing to see Malia,” Woodley told Democracy Now!. “To witness a human being and a woman coming into her own outside of her family and outside of the attachments that this country has on her [and as] someone who’s willing to participate in democracy because she chooses to, because she recognizes, regardless of her last name, that if she doesn’t participate in democracy, there will be no world for her future children.”

While protests had halted for a couple of months, Donald Trump’s recent executive order, reinstating the DAPL’s construction, has incited new protests. Following the news, environmental organization Greenpeace, released a statement, vowing to “resist this with all of our power, and we will continue to build the future the world wants to see.” It is unclear how much Malia will be involved in the movement going forward.
