Miami Teen Commits Suicide On Facebook Live

The Florida Department of Children & Families could offer little reasoning as to why a 14-year-old chose to commit suicide and broadcast it on Facebook Live. According to the Miami-Herald, Nakia Venant fashioned a noose from her scarf and then hung herself from the bathroom of her Miami Gardens foster home Sunday. (Jan. 22)

Although the stream ended abruptly after Nakia’s death, the horrific damage was done and authorities are now asking the public for privacy as they try and figure out why.

“We are absolutely horrified and devastated by the news of this young girl’s death,” said DCF Secretary Mike Carroll. “We will do everything we can to support this family and all those who cared for her as they begin to heal from this tragedy. We will conduct a comprehensive, multidisciplinary special review to examine this child’s history and the circumstances related to serving the child.”

In a statement sent to the Herald, DCF said the noose was attached to a “shower-glass door frame” and she died at about 3:03AM. She was later declared dead at a local hospital.

Nakia committed suicide while her parents were asleep in another room. Efforts were made to revive the teen however unsuccessful. According to a close friend, Nakia was smart, loved to smile and had lots of charisma. Unfortunately, Nakia’s death on Facebook Live isn’t the first. On Dec. 30, 12-year-old Katelyn Nicole Davis from Georgia also took her own life using a streaming app called “Live.me” Once Katelyn’s parent realized her suicide was online it was quickly removed but then uploaded to other sites including Facebook Live.
