Muhammad Ali Jr. Says He Was Detained Again At A D.C. Airport

In early February of this year, Muhammad Ali Jr. revealed that he was detained for a lengthy period of time at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. He was on his way home after finishing a community service trip in Jamaica. Now, the son of the legendary figure Muhammad Ali said he was detained yet again at Washington D.C.’s Ronald Reagan Airport.

The incident occurred on Friday (Mar. 10), when Ali Jr., 44, attempted to board a JetBlue flight to Florida. He recently wrapped up a town hall discussion on border security, the Associated Press reports, with his mother, Khalilah Camacho Ali in attendance. When they went through the procedure of airport routines, Homeland Security personnel detained Ali Jr. for 20 minutes.

According to his attorney, Chris Mancini, Ali Jr. had to present documents, including a license and passport, to prove his citizenship. He was born in Philadelphia, Penn. Mancini said upon their initial arrival in D.C., none of this occurred. “Going to Washington obviously opened up a can of worms at DHS,” he said.

In a previous interview with the AP, Ali Jr. discussed his first encounter with immigration officials, stating, “It’s like history is repeating itself. We’re having to fight for our humanity all over again. And now they’re sticking the religion on it.”
