Aries Spears: Black People Didn’t Latch On to Dave Chappelle Until the Chappelle Show

At just 16 years old, Aries Spears made his comedic debut at Def Comedy Jam with fellow funnyman Martin Lawrence. Though Eddie Murphy impacted him the most at a young age, it’s Dave Chappelle that holds the highest rank on his short list of favorite comedians – although he didn’t really appeal to the Black community until the Chappelle Show’s debut, according to Spears.

In this exclusive, Aries describes a time when Black comedians were rarely seen. He then goes on to discuss the tops name in the industry and how they’ve managed to stay on top. “Guys like Eddie Griffin, Bill Bellamy, Steve Harvey, Cedric [the Entertainer], – especially with the explosion of Comic View, which was kind of a little after that – those guys have always stayed in the bloodstream of the Black community, so to speak,” he explained to DJ Vlad.
