Raymond Santana and Yusef Salaam, two-fifths of the Central Park 5, were in their early teens when they were accused of sexually assaulting a young woman in Central Park in 1989. Here, Santana and Salaam describe the process by which the police tried to implicate them in the crime. “It was more sexy for it to be five people of color brutalizing a young wealthy investment banker,” Salaam says. Santana then describes how the police, playing good cop/bad cop, managed to coerce him into making false statements. Watch above.
