In this clip, Cyhi The Prynce discloses some information about the creative, collaborative process that occurs working with Kanye West. Cyhi said that he’s been focused primarily on writing after some label disputes left his business in limbo but he’s been a regular contributor to Yeezy’s musical output. Cyhi has been credited on roughly 30 Kanye tracks. He goes onto to discuss how Kanye brings in a team of writers and creatives to help produce his artistic vision and lets the viewers know that Kanye pays well, even for the most innocuous contribution. The conversation broadens when DJ Vlad asks for Cyhi’s take on ghostwriting in hip-hop. According to Cyhi, “once you’ve bodied rap” then a team of collaborators is necessary to compete with other genres of music. In a sense, Cyhi argues that transcending hip-hop into mainstream status dictates that you have a team of creatives in order to produce high-quality music at that “grammy level.” All of this despite hip-hop’s insistence on rappers writing their own lyrics and telling their own stories, but Cyhi made the point that some of your favorite rappers don’t have stories to carry them for 6 albums.
