Vocal Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban watched his team fall out of the NBA playoffs with a 118-104 Game-5 loss in Oklahoma on Monday (April 25), but not before his mouth got him into friction. During a post-game interview, a question posed for star point-guard Russell Westbook’s reaction to comments the billionaire made about him not being “a superstar”, was intercepted by teammate Kevin Durant. Durant, whom Cuban’s remark actually complimented as the Thunder’s “one superstar,” at Westbrook’s expense, defended his partner, repeatedly calling the Mavericks boss “an idiot.”
“He’s an idiot,” Durant positioned his hand over Westbrook’s mic and told the reporter on his behalf. “He’s an idiot. All right. That’s what we’ve got to say about that. He’s an idiot. Next question.”
Earlier in the day, Dallas’ animated entrepreneur followed up his claim that KD is their one and only, by clarifying that he does recognize that the five-time All-Star Westbrook is in fact an All-Star, but doesn’t to his estimation meet the play of the most elite in the game. In an apparent reference to Russ’ failure to lead Oklahoma to dominate in Durant’s absence last year, Cuban brought the reputation of his future hall-of-famer Dirk Nowitzki to memory, stating that “Dirk for 15 years won 50 games no matter what. We put Moe, Larry and Curly next to him and we won 50 games. Russ is certainly an All-Star, but I consider Durant a superstar.”
“There are only a few guys where you can put them on any team and they win 50 games. To me, that’s the definition of a superstar,” Cuban added.
Following a season in which his aggressive play helped him average a double double [23.5 points per game and 10.4 assists – with 7.8 rebounds to boot], there aren’t many who would agree with Cuban at this point. His 18 triple-doubles amounted to more by any player in a season since Magic Johnson did it 30 years ago. The Mav’s head coach disagreed with his boss’ assessment, stating that he thought there were three superstars on the floor, including Nowitzki, Durant, as well as Westbrook. “I thought Westbrook played beautiful basketball this year,” the coach said.
