It’s no secret that there is no love lost between Kanye West and Nike. After leaving Nike back in 2013, he’s publicly bashed the retail giant numerous times in the press. Despite the massive success of the Nike Air Yeezy line with each model selling for retail for under $250 and currently commanding upwards of $5,000 on eBay, Kanye wasn’t happy with the deal he had with Nike. He passionately discussed his displeasure back in 2013 with Angie Martinez.

He then made the move over to Nike’s direct competitor adidas who did offer up royalties. But how did that move happen? According to designer Jeremy Scott, it was his introduction that sealed the deal. In an interview with Complex Style, Scott said:

“I’m the person who brought [Kanye West] to adidas. It was back, maybe in 2009, 2008, when he was so excited by the line, and he conveyed to me passionately that he wanted to do something with them.”

Judging by Scott’s timeline of events, West was still with Nike when that discussion took place. Kanye’s move over to adidas hasn’t slowed down the demand for Kanye’s kicks with the Yeezy Boosts creating the same, if not more buzz than ever. It also allowed him to launch a clothing line, the Kanye West x Adidas Originals Collection back in February. It’s just been announced that he will host a surprise preview of the second season of the line this Wednesday during New York Fashion Week, which wife Kim Kardashian previewed on Instagram. If the meme’s online about his first collection are any indication, his sneaker deigns will remain to be his winning move.
