Irish voters have taken to the polls and overwhelmingly backed an amendment to their constitution that legalizes gay marriage. This is an amazing milestone for a predominantly Catholic country with a very conservative Catholic constitution. Homosexuality itself was only decriminalized in 1993.

Roughly 62% of voters decided to vote yes, while 38% voted no– in total, about 60% of Ireland’s more than 3 million eligible voters hit the polls, with over 1 million of them choosing marriage equality.
