Rap stars who lead their cliques usually are the only breakout stars, however, when it came to Dipset, JR Writer says Cam’ron made sure to push his ego aside and support his artists. “Once Cam sees Jim and Juelz out the way, he’ll be like, ‘JR and Hell Rell, come meet me over here. Let’s do this photo shoot for this cover, go to the radio kill it, do it like that because these n***** already poppin’ so let’s get y’all s*** poppin’.'”

With Cam’s efforts, JR said he found himself between bidding wars with labels and ended up signing with Koch Records and released his first album History in the Making. “That album was number two in the country. It would’ve been number one if it wasn’t for—rest in peace—Pimp C.” JR told DJ Vlad, “It did great numbers. They was happy over [at Koch Records].”

In this interview, JR opens up about recording his first song in front of Jay Z, seeing the tension between Jay and Cam, how the group drifted apart, and why he received a cease and desist order for using the Dipset logo on his project.
