The cast of the upcoming film, “When Love Kills: The Falicia Blakely Story” stops by Sway in the Morning to talk about the process of making this film and the significance of this film for young women.
Director of the film, Tasha Smith, explains that this film portrays a young women named Falicia Blakely who unfortunately made poor choices of committing murders for a manipulative man. Addressing so many issues, the film also conveys the complexity in a mother and daughter relationship, in which Falicia Blakley character which is Niatia Kirkland (aka Lil Mama) suffers from similar challenges that her mother (played by Tami Roman) endured as well. For actors Kirkland and Roman, they explain that the process required humanizing and stepping into their characters’ perspective. Aspiring to expand his list of acting roles, Lance Gross gives details to his work behind the scenes for his character. To prepare for such a role, Gross discusses his growing up in Oakland, California as a point of reference for analyzing his character’s life.
Most importantly, the cast hopes that this film reaches out to young women and encourages women to always make their own decisions rather than feeling manipulated into an issue without any agency at all.
