Thrasher Magazine’s Jake Phelps Slams Bieber & Rihanna

This isn’t the first time someone in the skating world has come out to publicly slam celebrities who they feel have encroached on their industry. Earlier this year, one skater shared his issues with Vogue’s creation of a skate week. “I think Vogue is fucking dumb and knows nothing about skating, and their approach was ignorant and stupid.”

In the same way, Phelps takes skating culture seriously and likes to showcase real talent dedicated to the sport on the pages of the magazine. “No one can tell the magazine what’s cool. Anybody can cover a hard trick in the Mountain Dew contest,” he explained. “We don’t cover all that crap.”

His attitude is equally serious when it comes down to deciding who is going to grace the cover of the magazine’s annual Skater of the Year issue, which is basically the highest honor the magazine can give. “I’m not gonna give the award to some Johnny-come-last-month, flavor-of-the-week guy.” For this year’s winner, that meant skater Anthony Van Engelen was awarded the honor for “services rendered,” or the dues he’s paid over a decade-long career.
