Virgil Roberts on Suge Knight Bringing Dr. Dre & DOC Over Unpaid Royalties

Virgil Roberts of SOLAR (Sounds of Los Angeles Records) sat with DJ Vlad to discuss the history of Death Row from its inception. According to Roberts, Suge Knight brought in Dr. Dre and The D.O.C. in search of a better financial situation. Suge made it clear that “his guys” as Roberts recalls, weren’t being paid at Ruthless Records for their contributions. Roberts said he asked Dr. Dre exactly how much did he contribute to the Ruthless catalog to which Dre ran down a litany of hits from N.W.A., J.J. Fad, Michel’e, and Eazy E. Roberts goes on to speak about how Dr. Dre was taught a lesson in the music business and how this eventually led to the creation of Death Row Records. He also touches on getting Dre his first publishing deal, the original name of Death Row being “Future Shock Records,” and how The Chronic was recorded in the SOLAR studios.
