Nicki Minaj Is Proud to Be an Immigrant
Nicki Minaj has spoken out against the Muslim ban. The “Pound the Alarm” rapper expressed her opposition to President Donald Trump’s executive order barring citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States for a 90-day period by noting her own status as an immigrant.
“The most harmful thing you could ever take away from another human being is hope. #ProudImmigrant #Grateful #TaxPayerButIcantVote #America,” Nicki wrote on Twitter.
The Queens MC was born in Trinidad and Tobago before moving to New York as a young child. Trump’s policy struck a nerve with Nicki like it did with many others throughout the hip-hop community. Def Jam founder Russell Simmons, a longtime friend of Trump, also criticized the Muslim ban via social media.
“I have worked for decades on religious tolerance,” he wrote on Twitter. “@realDonaldTrump’s Muslim ban is against everything this country was founded on. Shameful.”
Uber CEO Travis Kalanick’s ties to Trump and the company’s alleged strike breaking at protests have also lead to boycotts in the wake of the Muslim ban. Portland rapper Amine was one of the many to announce he would never use Uber again.
The transportation network company also lost one of its biggest advocates in Madeintyo. The Atlanta rapper known for his “Uber Everywhere” single declared that he wouldd stop using the service as well. Madeintyo also pledged new allegiance to Uber’s main rival Lyft.
