According to the Associated Press, a trial date for the St. Anthony, Minn., officer has been set for May 30. On July 6, 2016, just one day after Alton Sterling was shot and killed by law enforcement in Louisiana, 32-year-old Castile, along with his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds and their 4-year-old daughter were pulled over by Yanez for what should’ve been a routine traffic stop.

According to Yanez’s defense attorney, the 30-year-old officer “feared for his life” which is why he fired into the vehicle, despite Castile informing him he was carrying a weapon along with a permit. Castile’s death made headlines because Reynolds streamed the shooting aftermath on Facebook live.
