Protests Over Immigration Ban Hit JFK & More U.S. Airports
President Donald Trump’s executive order banning refugees from entering the U.S. has led to protests at airports around the country. Thousands of demonstrators swarmed John F. Kennedy International Airport, Dulles International Airport, and Chicago O’Hare Saturday (Jan. 28) in opposition to Trump’s latest controversial move.

Some 13,000 people are reportedly protesting at JFK, where a dozen refugees were detained. Hameed Khalid Darweesh, 53-year-old Iraqi man who worked as a U.S. Army translator, was among the detainees. Darweesh was eventually released, after being held for four hours.

Approximately 18 people were detained at O’Hare airport, including an Iranian-born green card holder along with his wife and child, who have since been released.
According to NBC Washington, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced that one family has been detained at Dulles, but did not provide further details. MacAuliffe denounced Trump’s ban on Syrian refugees, and travelers from seven Muslim countries, including Iraq, Libya, and Somalia.
McAuliffe said that he has asked state Attorney General Mark Herring to explore “all legal remedies” to help detainees.
“We are a state that is opening and welcoming to everyone,” said McAuliffe. “I’m very concerned about the ramifications of this new executive order.”
