Rosario Dawson Reacts To “Eerily Reminiscent” Pepsi Ad

As Pepsi became a trending topic for all the wrong reasons in the wake of its latest campaign starring Kendall Jenner, Rosario Dawson couldn’t help but notice ties between the brand’s tone-deaf advertisement and a music video she shot more than a decade ago.

“Eerily reminiscent of Chemical Brothers’ “Out Of Control” we shot in Mexico City ~15 yrs ago sadly minus the point,” the Luke Cage actress tweeted on Tuesday (April 4).

Through Dawson’s satirical depiction of a revolutionary hero that manages to mend a warring Mexico through nothing more than seductive charm and a bottle of soda, the electronic duo pointed out the pitfalls of an advertising industry that oversimplified social issues at hand. Sounds familiar, no?

Pepsi has since pulled their advertisement and issued an apology after its initial lukewarm response. “Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue,” the statement, posted on Wednesday (April 5), reads. “We are removing the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position.”
