Royce Da 5’9″ Joins VIBE For The Debut #SportsRAPup

Royce Da 5’9″ is one of the true lyricists in hip-hop, but he’s also a sports nerd and boxing savant in particular.  The Detroit native is the perfect candidate for our first ever VSports: Rap Up segment, where The Slaughterhouse member spits insight on trending topics in the professional sports world. We had the Layers artist shed light on the canceling of the Manny Pacquiao-Amir Khan bout, Brandon Marshall signing with the Giants, March Madness and a bonus Biggie Smalls question.

VIBE: How do you feel about the canceling of the Pacquaio v Khan fight? Who would’ve won and why?

Royce: I liked that fight a lot. Khan probably matches up with Pac as far as speed, but I just think Pac’s power would eventually catch up. So I would say Pacquiao by KO.

What do you think about Brandon Marshall going across town and signing with the New York Giants?

I haven’t really been following much NFL news, but I have been seeing a lot about this deal with Brandon Marshall and the Giants. Two years and $12 million? Good for him [laughs].

Who do you have in the NCAA March Madness tourny this year?

I’ve been following the Ball brothers a little bit. Hard to ignore Lonzo Ball at UCLA. He’s the real deal and his Dad seems savvy. I think he’ll deliver the goods.

With it being the 20th anniversary of Notorious B.I.G’s passing (March 9), what’s your favorite line of his?

I feel like the entire hook to “What’s Beef” are some of the most important lyrics in the history of hip-hop. I’m dead ass serious [laughs]. So true, so real, so to the point and so lyrical. We’ll be repeating them forever.
