“I’m happy that we were able to turn an unfortunate situation into something really positive,” Streeter told ESPN ahead of her performance. “I’m singing the anthem, I’m wearing my ‘We Matter’ jersey, I just got done playing with some kids from the Boys & Girls Club… I feel awesome.”
Streeter went on to explain the significance of her apparently controversial jersey.
“Me saying ‘We Matter,’ [and] singing the anthem, there’s no conflict in the two for me. I love my country so much that when you love something you only want it to be better. That’s what ‘We Matter’ means to me.”
