2006: Atlanta rap crew D4L crafted a platinum-selling hit and guaranteed new millennium party-starter when they recorded their 2005 single “Laffy Taffy.” Produced by Born Immaculate, Broderick Thompson Smith, and “K-Rab,” the track samples New Edition’s “Candy Girl” and intricately plays with elements of Southern snap music. What’s better is that when the song’s video was dropped, D4L introduced an easy and infectious dance move to do to the track, making it a hit in clubs across America.
Released in October 2005, the banger enjoyed a steady rise up the charts and Fabo, Mook-B, Stoney, and Shawty Lo celebrated their first Billboard No. 1 song on Jan. 14, 2006. “Laffy Taffy” was officially remixed by Busta Rhymes later that year and the phase “Shake that Laffy Taffy” serves as a pop culture reference for any kid who grew up in the early ’00s.
To date, “Laffy Taffy” is three times platinum is the U.S., is D4L’s biggest single and remains one of the longest running No. 1 songs in hip-hop history.
