In a candid interview, former U.S. Army sniper Nicholas Irving shared his harrowing experience during his first deployment in Afghanistan. Irving recounted his first time being shot at, initially unaware bullets were flying—he described the sounds as faint snaps, comparable to a ruler hitting a desk. It wasn’t until his team leader tackled him to the ground that he realized they were under fire. That intense night, Irving and his team eliminated 14 Taliban fighters, including a young enemy combatant who tried to feign death before firing on the Americans.
Irving also reflected on the brutal reality of the conflict, witnessing atrocities such as beheadings and public beatings. One vivid memory involved a Taliban fighter using his son as a human shield. He recalled a significant operation in Helmand Province where he and his spotter took out six enemy leaders lined up protecting a street—a feat that earned him a valorous award. His stories highlight the complexity and harshness of combat beyond the headlines.
