Nicholas Irving, former Army Ranger sniper, voiced his criticism of former President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy Marines to manage the ICE protests in Los Angeles. The protests, which occurred after ICE agents conducted raids and arrests in the city, were deemed relatively peaceful by local officials. Irving argued that Trump overreacted by using military force, suggesting that the deployment of the Marines and National Guard was unnecessary. Irving stated that active duty troops, especially Marines, are trained primarily for combat, not crowd control or civil unrest. “A marine is a hammer,” he said, highlighting his concern that relying on military force for civilian issues can lead to further escalation. Irving called for greater discretion in employing military power domestically, stressing potential long-term implications.
