in defense of Chloe Bailey…
Chloe Bailey burst onto the scene with her sister Halle, forming he R&B duo Chloe x Halle. The two were signed to Beyonce’s label, and seemed to have a promising career ahead. The sisters released successful albums like the Kids Are All Right and Ungodly Hour. But it was when Chloe started her solo career that she caught backlash from the Internet. Many called Chloe’s new persona fake, cringey, and said she was doing too much. Her new singles Have Mercy and Treat Me are completely different than the music she’d released before, and while the songs are great, a lot of their hype was clouded by her behavior on social media. Is her behavior really a problem, or does society still just fail to give black women grace to be seen how they want? (The answer is yes). In this video, I explore how Chloe Bailey takes control of her image, and how being a successful and talented artists sadly doesn’t do much to protect her from unfair criticism and misogynoir.
