Why Dr Dre Gave up on Detox
In certain cases, albums have such a special aura that it becomes part of the project’s legacy. Whether it’s a monumental debut like Illmatic or Enter The 36 Chambers through to game-changing albums of work such as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Aquemini, the inspirations, intentions and recording process behind some records never cease to fascinate me.
But when it comes to hip-hop albums that have obtained mythical status, the project that harbors the most intrigue of all is one that never even saw the light of day. Officially declared over in 2015 after Dre unveiled the star-studded ‘Compton’, the record is now referred to as one of hip hop’s biggest what if’s.
