Ramona Rakestraw, a Dallas resident, says her benefits were paused over immigration status 😢
#Soulmates Oh wow! 😢59-year-old #RamonaRakestraw, a lifelong Dallas resident, says her SSI benefits were suddenly paused in October over questions about her immigration status; even though she has never left the U.S. 🇺🇸
Rakestraw, who is battling cancer and kidney disease, depends entirely on SSI for her income. While her Medicare Part B coverage was eventually restored, her SSI payments remain in limbo. She reportedly received a letter saying, “We cannot pay you benefits because you are not lawfully present in the U.S.” Yet Ramona was born in 1966 at Parkland Hospital in Dallas and has never lived outside Dallas County.
It’s shocking that someone fighting for their life must also fight for the benefits they rely on to survive. Social Security has since apologized and confirmed a payment would be issued, but this shouldn’t happen to anyone. 😡🩺
