Should Sha'Carri Richardson Be Allowed to Compete in the 2021 Olympics?
Sha’Carri Richardson is the 100 and 200 meter sprinter who recently qualified and was later disqualified from the 2021 Summer Olympics in Japan. She was disqualified because she tested positive for marijuana use. She stated that she used the drug to cope with the pressure of trying to qualify for the Olympics while mourning the death of her mother. A petition that gained 450,000 signatures was gathered in protest of her being disqualified. Marijuana use is not against Olympic rules as long as the athlete isn’t competing. Also, it’s legal in several states of the United States. So, the question is should the Olympics bend the rules for Sha’Carri?
