In this clip, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reflects on his history of drug use, which he says started after his father’s death. He candidly admits to having been “born an addict,” feeling that he was likely destined to go down the path of drug abuse due to certain personal characteristics and struggles with ADHD as a child. Kennedy Jr. mentions how his drug use, particularly heroin, helped him initially to remain calm and focus better, which even resulted in improved academic performance. However, he also acknowledges heroin’s destructive nature, comparing it to “dancing with a gorilla” – it doesn’t end till the gorilla wants it to. He finally kicked his drug habit after a public charge for heroin possession in 1983. Rather than feeling exposed, he felt liberated by this public revelation, which triggered an inner spiritual “realignment,” enabling him to seek help and become sober. Despite facing some difficulties along his journey, Kennedy Jr. successfully overcame his addiction by fully committing to a 12-step program and hasn’t looked back since.
