Akala came by VladTV to discuss his feelings on Brexit, The European Union, and the Prime Minister resigning after Britain voted to leave the EU. Vlad told Akala that most people in the U.S are having a hard time understanding the actual issues with the Brexit situation, and Akala was glad to explain what all of the Brexit and EU issues meant. He began by explaining how there are valid reasons to criticize the EU, but Britain wasn’t in the best position to be making those critiques. “Britain’s been involved in more foreign wars than other powers within the EU in recent years; we lock up our population about twice the rate Germans do. We have one of the widest social inequalities in the whole of Europe, we have almost the lowest educational attainment, in many ways Britain is the America of Europe…” Akala explained that America is very divided racially and socially, and Britain is the same way.

Akala told Vlad that the whole issue of Brexit and the EU somehow became centered around the issue of immigration. However, this didn’t make sense because the EU didn’t determine Britain’s immigration policy which was admitted after Brexit was over. “The whole tone of the debate came to be around the fear of black and brown immigrants coming through Europe into the U.K… trying to flee wars that Britain has partially been involved in…” Akala explained many of the people in the U.K saw that the way the Brexit campaign played out was almost entirely about immigration, and although it was pointed out that immigration was irrelevant, there were many lies involved which made a lot of the Brexit issues confusing. The day after the vote went into place many of the foreign workers were sent home, and Akala explained the vote revealed a lot of divisions within the Britain’s society. “80% of the people who voted to leave felt that immigration is a bad thing.”

In regards to the Prime Minister resigning right after Brexit, Akala explained that everyone jumped ship because they clearly didn’t have confidence when they left the EU. “…now we have an unelected person in power in a democratic society, and surely if the Prime Minister resigns there should be another election…British politics right now are very tumultuous, very difficult, very challenging; there’s a lot of divisions in the society… it’s interesting to see how it will play out.” Akala also explained to Vlad that Britain isn’t exactly out of the EU just yet, they’ve only cast a vote on whether they wanted to leave or stay. This is causing issues for businesses to be able to plan for the future of their companies. Akala’s primary concern about the leaving the EU is Britain’s future. He explained many of those people of color who have done well for themselves in Britain are just deciding to go back to their homeland due to them feeling unwelcomed.
