Back in the day Freeway Ricky used his kingpin status as an opportunity to create other ventures – even while incarcerated. “I paid for Anita Baker’s first album,” he revealed to DJ Vlad as he detailed his short-lived music-industry career. At one point he had the chance to sign Tha Alkaholiks to jump start his label, but was thrown in the hole while negotiating contracts. “I was in jail when I did it, yeah…All the bread wasn’t gone then,” Freeway recalled with a smile.
Freeway Ricky also knew Michael “Harry-O” Harris, the man responsible for co-founding Death Row Records and Broadway’s first African-American-produced show starring Denzel Washington. After claiming he “was there when him and Suge met,” Freeway remembered telling Harry-O “you better use Dre on that album, you know him and Eazy fell out so he ain’t working right now. So Harry took that advice and started looking for Dr. Dre and Suge Knight was his manager. We’ll leave it right there.”
