Comedian Gary Owen explains why Black comics take pride in looking fashionable when doing stand up versus White comics. In an article with BuzzFeed, the comedian said “White comics don’t have to worry about image” when it comes to appearance, because African Americans take pride in wearing their finest outfits for shows compared to Whites.
He explained, “Like the blog sites, they will eat you up if you’re not dressed a certain way as Black comics. When you go to a theatre show—especially for Black people—Black people get dressed up, it doesn’t mean it has to be in a suit, but they[re] gonna bring out their Gucci polo, or their Gucci belt, they’re gonna bring out the new shoes, or go get a haircut.” He added, “And if you look at HBO Louis C.K.’s special, there are people wearing flip flops and Tommy Bahama shirts—wrinkled.”
